What God is doing in India
2013 is nearly over, but it has been a very eventful year for the work in India. This report is a very brief recap of some of the important events of the year. We continue to see the hand of God in our efforts to expand the Kingdom in this great nation. Actually, we are just trying to “keep up” with what He is already doing there.
India Discipleship Network (IDN) becomes a reality
In February we filed the necessary paperwork to form a non-profit corporation in Collin County and the state of Texas. That has been completed and a tax ID established. We are now an approved non-profit corporation. A seven-member Board of Directors was appointed to direct the new organization. Then we began the process of filing for IRS approval as a 501(c)3 federal tax exempt organization. After much research and planning, that documentation is now ready to submit. While approval of our application is pending, all donations and contributions are fully deductible on federal income tax.
IDN was created to assist the ongoing efforts of the work we have been doing in India for more than 38 years. Our major focus is to train preachers, establish churches, support widows and orphans, rescue and provide for abandoned girls and provide free education for poor children. All of these efforts are directed toward “Being disciples and Making disciples”. IDN will provide spiritual and financial support to encourage and train Indians to take the gospel to their own people and beyond. A new IDN website is currently under construction. We will post reports, articles and newsletters there to keep you updated on all the efforts we are involved with. We will announce its opening very soon with the appropriate URL.
Major funding for the daily operation of three “access ministries” – TPG Christian School, Bethany Girls Home and the Brookshire Memorial Children’s Home – is provided by churches and Christians in America. The Patton Lane church in Tyler will continue to receive and distribute funds for those ministries. IDN will assist as needed to supplement funds for operational or special needs. Additionally, IDN will provide capital for renovations or expansion of needed projects to support the work of the Indians as they assume the responsibility of directing all of the current and future ministries in India.
IDN Dinner in Tyler
Several churches of Christ in the Tyler area have supported and encouraged the work in India over the years. Patton Lane church of Christ has provided the monthly salary support for Jacob Chukka for nearly 25 years. They have also participated in the support of the Bethany Girls Home since 2005. The Dean & Maureen Brookshire Memorial Children’s Home was established by the children and friends of this longtime Christian couple from the Tyler area. Their son, Dudley, is the preacher for the Patton Lane church.
The West Erwin church of Christ agreed to host an IDN information/fund-raising dinner with the Patton Lane church (specifically Jeanie Brookshire) handling all the logistics. Fifty-four people from various churches in the Tyler area attended. Each guest received a copy of the newly published “What God Is Doing In India” booklet giving the biography of Jacob Chukka and the history of the work he began and continues in India.
Jacob Visits America
In April Jacob came to the USA to visit and report to the churches and individuals who sponsor and support the work in India. While staying at the home of Bob and Wendy Nelson, members at Patton Lane, he visited many other churches in the area who are involved in the work. He then spent over two weeks in the Dallas area where he visited the Saturn Road congregation and many individual Christians who are involved and/or appreciate his work. He included a visit to the Ft. Worth facility of Healing Hands International who provided funds for computers for the TPG Christian School computer lab. The last stop on his itinerary was in Breckenridge, TX to visit and report to the Elliot St. congregation.
On the return trip to India he stopped for two days in New York to visit with a family he baptized in India and they subsequently moved to the USA. He taught several other families while there and encouraged them to start a congregation in their home.
Jacob’s wife, Asi, was planning to make the trip with him, but was not able to get a visa from the US Consulate there. Their children provided the funds for the trip.
2013 India Trip
In August Ray Hooper and David Jenkins spent two weeks in India. It was David’s first trip to India, but he had previously visited Romania and Russia extensively. Mark Hooper and Kyle Hooper joined them in Bangalore and Hyderabad for meetings and discipleship training seminars. Mark is the Asia Coordinator for Missions Resource Network (MRN). Kyle and his wife are preparing to move to Cambodia with a team in early 2015. Mark and Kyle presented a two day seminar on disciple making in Hyderabad, then went on to Mumbai to do a similar seminar for the churches there. Mark also presented the concept of a Global Launch Site to the Bangalore churches and leaders. We hope they will accept the challenge and responsibility of spreading the gospel of Jesus all over India and beyond.
Ray, David and Jacob went on from Hyderabad to visit the TPG Christian School, Bethany Girls Home and the Brookshire Memorial Children’s Home. Culture and language are serious barriers for Americans to spread the gospel in India, so, we are expanding our efforts to train, encourage and equip the Indians to “BE Disciples and MAKE Disciples”. The ongoing efforts of the above ministries help us reach the upcoming generations with the gospel while training adults to be disciples now and train others. Daily Bible classes are taught at each facility so the children learn about God and His plan for mankind. For more details about the above ministries, please request a brochure. You may also request a copy of the booklet “What God Is Doing In India” if you have made a donation of any kind or amount to IDN or Patton Lane.
IDN “Benefit Sales” Successful
Generous donations of new and used items formed the basis for three very successful benefit sales in 2013. The Spring sale in March, the Fall sale in September and a special Christmas sale in December netted more than $10,000 for the IDN General Fund. Donated items included new Christmas and gift items from friends who operate an online store. Three families donated items from the estates of loved ones. Several items were sold on Craigslist and eBay. Dedicated volunteers helped prepare for and assist customers during the sale. They also helped pack up the items for storage that did not sell. We are grateful for the involvement of the volunteers and the generosity of the donors who made these sales successful fund-raising events.
While writing this Newsletter I received word that Jacob has been admitted to the hospital with a heart attack while “out of station” at TPG. We are in constant contact with his family and the preachers in the area who are attending to his needs. They are currently in the process of transferring him to a major hospital Cardiology Center in Hyderabad where they have the facilities and staff for heart surgery. We are praying for a complete recovery for Jacob and invite you to join us.
